Topic: The Great Indoors: Biophilic Design to Support Human Health and Wellness in the Built Environment

Biophilia, or our innate human connection to the natural world, has been shown to foster physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing. The principles of biophilic design support these connections by cultivating this relationship within the built environment, where in the U.S., we are estimated to be spending over 90% of our time. In this session, we will: 1. Review the value and science of biophilia 2. Outline the primary 6 biophilic design elements 3. Present an in-depth, local healthcare case study 4. Review methods for optimal biophilic design project integration

Speaker: Sonja Bochart, IIDA, WELL AP, LEED AP BD&C, Principal, Shepley Bulfinch

Sonja Bochart has over twenty years of project experience as a health and wellness focused designer, and biophilic design consultant, workshop facilitator, and educator. Her consulting work includes projects meeting LEED, LBC and WELL Building Standard certifications. With a focus in regenerative design that support both human and ecological health and well-being; and a background in healing arts, she leads experientially based biophilic design project team workshops helping projects maximize biophilia integration. Sonja attests that well-designed projects not only respect and support our communities and their surrounding environment, they promote holistic human health - creating places of wellness
